WHO WE ARE

Ghana is blessed with abundant natural resources - green vegetation, shimmering rivers and water bodies, a beautiful shoreline, and generous amounts of mineral and oil deposits. One would expect that these resources would be exploited in a sustainable manner to fuel the country’s growth into a more prosperous future, while preserving the quality of life of her people.

Unfortunately, in the past few years, illegal and irresponsible mining practices and illegal mining (aka Galamsey), made possible by lackluster supervision and lax regulatory regimes, coupled with institutionalized corruption, have left unspeakable devastation in most of the country.

Millions of Ghanaians have been affected by the unparalleled devastation in many communities, especially in the Western, Western North, Ashanti, Central, Brong Ahafo, Ahafo and Northern regions of Ghana. Rivers like Pra, Ankobra, Tano, Offin, Birim, White Volta, Subile and large lagoons and water bodies like the Juen Lagune and Abby Lagoon between the Ghana and La Côte D’Ivoire border have been destroyed from Mercury and silt contamination. Mercury poisoning is now very evident in many communities. Outside of Mining, the environmental effects of Oil and Gas activities, amid the unequitable distribution of wealth from these finite resources point to an unsustainable future for the country.

It is in the light of this that we have formed the Ghana Environmental Advocacy Group (G.E.A.G). GEAG is made up of people from Ghana, both home and abroad, who care about the environment and the people who are being so unfairly impacted by the destruction and unsustainable exploitation of our water bodies, vegetation, and land.
