Petitions by the Ghana Advocacy Group (GEAG)

GEAG is committed to driving change through strategic petitions addressing environmental protection, social justice, and institutional accountability. Collaborating with like-minded organizations, GEAG has championed numerous causes, including combating illegal mining, holding institutions accountable, and advocating for national reforms.

Petition Against Illegal Mining in Ghana

Illegal mining, locally referred to as galamsey, continues to devastate Ghana’s environment, with severe consequences for rivers, forests, and agricultural lands. GEAG has launched petitions calling for stronger enforcement of anti-mining laws, prosecution of offenders, and community education to prevent illegal mining activities.

A notable effort in this regard is the group’s collaboration with A Rocha Ghana to petition key authorities about the troubling disappearance of foreign nationals arrested for illegal mining.

Petition to the Chief Justice

In a joint initiative with A Rocha Ghana, GEAG petitioned the Chief Justice, the Minister of Interior, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), with a copy to the Speaker of Parliament, demanding accountability for missing foreign nationals arrested for illegal mining.

This petition was prompted by an investigative report from The Fourth Estate (July 20, 2022), which revealed that, of the hundreds of foreign nationals arrested for illegal mining in Ghana, only two Chinese nationals had been jailed. The report exposed a significant gap in the judicial process, raising concerns about systemic bias and enforcement failures.
