Justice for Pious — A Child Killed, A Community Silenced
On December 13, 2025, 13-year-old Master Pious Nketia was shot and killed in Adelekεzo by armed private security working for an illegal mining company. No one has been held accountable. The Attorney-General withdrew all charges. Six community youth — including three minors — were arrested for destroying mining equipment while the killers walked free.
Adelekεzo’s story is Ghana’s story: illegal mining, abuse of power, environmental destruction, and systemic injustice. GHEAG is demanding that the Inspector-General of Police, the Attorney-General, and the President reopen the case, reinvestigate the killing, and enforce Ghana’s mining laws without fear or favour.
Illegal mining, locally referred to as galamsey, continues to devastate Ghana’s environment, with severe consequences for rivers, forests, and agricultural lands. GEAG has launched petitions calling for stronger enforcement of anti-mining laws, prosecution of offenders, and community education to prevent illegal mining activities.
A notable effort in this regard is the group’s collaboration with A Rocha Ghana to petition key authorities about the troubling disappearance of foreign nationals arrested for illegal mining.
